Effectiveness, as Peter Drucker famously asserted, is about doing the right things. Though we may like to think that we are trying our hardest to be effective, sometimes we end up falling short. What exactly needs to happen, if we want to be truly effective?

Effectiveness is achieved when we are genuinely committed to an activity that reflects our deepest values. Being committed gives us the energy to put more effort and dedication into the work and make it outstanding. Having a connection to one’s deepest held values also gives the clarity and confidence necessary to have a fulfilling career and life. It makes it easier to say no to the things that will not benefit you.

Why Work More Hours

When we get caught up in productivity, we may fail to check and see if we have the right perspective on our work and life. This is why the idea of a “pregnant pause” is highly important. It is not just a rest from that never-ending task list. A pause from our work and life helps us reflect on our performance, rejuvenates us, and even prepares us for a change of course, if needed.

The last of Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits, “Sharpening the Saw,” outlines and reminds us that our goal to be effective is not complete unless our self-improvement involves all aspects of our spiritual, emotional, physical and mental selves. This is often quickly given up or forgotten in the rush of the day.
