How do you talk to someone who has just lost their job and is dejected, or needs your support? Chances are high that someone in your circle, be it a friend, family member, former colleague or acquaintance, is struggling with a recently lost job. Louise Lee’s article in BusinessWeek Online offers readers some helpful tips on how to talk to someone who’s been hit hard— What to say and what are the things to stay clear of.

Some good tips include waiting for others to share the news of their unemployment even if you have already heard of it through word of mouth; offering encouragement and references whenever possible; and discouraging rash or angry emails to ex-bosses that could do more harm than good.
